I will try and remember to write an update when I turn 40, to tell you how the bag aged with me, but from other Kankens I saw around the world, they seem to really last. I have a kanken backpack and loved it for the first month until it rained and discovered it’s not waterproof at all. I’ve yet to find substantial evidence that it is eco-friendly, and wonder whether the Vietnamese factory where it is made is a sweatshop.
Like many companies, it probably started out as ‘eco-friendly’ by sourcing locally grown, possibly organic, materials. But like Icebreaker in my home country NZ, once it goes offshore to China, Vietnam, or other manufacturing countries, quality control of other production factors such as material quality and wage equity etc, becomes nearly impossible.
If you’re planning to store large bottles of water in the Kanken’s side compartments, you may be disappointed. While ideal for smaller items like phones and umbrellas, the sides aren’t quite large enough to hold big bottled waters. If you’re looking for a reliable backpack for everyday use, cheap Fjallraven backpack is one of the best bags on the market. Kanken owners report using their bags for carrying everything from schoolbooks to expensive electronics, in a number of different environments ranging from urban commutes to remote hikes and just about everything in-between.
So how big is 16 Liters? What does 38x27x13 cms look like? I went searching around my house for standard size items to fill it with. Two sheafs of 9×11 copy paper (500 count each) can lay width-wise at the bottom, and there would still be room for a six-pack of your beverage of choice at the top. You could fit a fairly thick paperback book in the outside pocket.,,,,Why would you want to pack that combination of things is anyone’s guess.
This bag is the perfect size! I love the protected laptop compartment and the side pockets fit my smartphone perfectly which was a nice surprise! It’s replacing a two year old Herschel and am hoping that it will wear better than that one did. Kanken disciples are quick to discuss the bag’s waterproof properties. The secret is the material itself. Vinylon F is a synthetic fibre that, like a natural fibre, swells when damp and creates a waterproof shield around your homework. Incredibly, during heavy downpours, a puddle develops on the roof of its front zip-up pocket, where you keep your pens and keys, in the manner of a gutter.
Vinylon F fabric is exceptionally durable and water resistant for reliable day-to-day use, Top carry handles and shoulder straps provide versatile carry options, Removable seat pad gives you a comfy place to sit while waiting at the bus stop or lunching outside, Front zippered pocket provides quick access to essential items. I have been using this bag as a diaper bag which is perfect! The material is very durable! Its a little on the small size for my husband to wear but for me its fine and all of the straps and top handle make it easy to attach to the stroller and still access what you need. The fog color is more of a grey than expected, but still a great color.
I’ve worn this pack on my commute every workday for the last 2 years. I’ve jammed clothes, beers, laptops, books, and bicycle tools into this thing without any problems. The front zippered pocket has enough room for keys, wallet, knife, lip balm, gum, cigarettes, lotto tickets, etc. Best of all, it straps down perfectly to my bike rack. It’s lightweight and has worn out nicely for a more vintage look. Ocean Green / Fog Kanken Mini Backpack by Fjallraven Kanken features logo tab details with a single zip pocket on front.
The Kanken is Awesome! I love everything about it. The bag feels cheap but the more you use it, the more you appreciate the classic/modern look and it’s durability. It can easily handle lunch, water and a layer in the main compartment leaving you space in the exterior zippered pocked and also room for a tablet, book or small laptop in the interior sleeve. When the students where asked to picture themselves buying the product at home or in a store, the students would choose the green friendly backpack in public, because of the public eyes on them. The students who imagined buying it at home would choose the backpack with more features. Cloud was trying to point out how people would only be environmentally conscious when they were seen doing so in public for a good reputation.

When I first received this backpack I was super worried when I realized how small it looked! I am a college student and have a large binder, pencil cases, a wallet and other stuff to lug to school! At first glance, I didn’t think it would fit any of my stuff! I opened it up and expanded it from its original state and much to my surprise it fit my stuff perfectly! I have only had it a few days so I can’t comment on the longevity but so far it has been great! Not too bulky and very stylish!

I ordered this backpack for my sister for Christmas. The cheap kanken backpack ended up being a much different pink color than the pictures online suggest; it was much closer to a bubble gum pink color. The kanken backpack itself was great, but my sister ended up wanting to exchange it for another color. I’m glad that I purchased this backpack. The colors that it comes in are so pretty and I had a hard time picking but the turquoise color is what I ultimately went with.
As advertised, it is truly water-resistant. The size is nice too because it fits a lot but doesn’t give you enough space to allow yourself to make it huge. It seems for me that with backpacks, or any type of bag in general, when I have the extra space, I suddenly find more stuff I “need” to have with me. So, as I said, the size is really perfect.

I received as a present last month and find it very functional as a pack or a murse/ hip brief case. I can pack and grab it as I go walking on urban adventures or take it with to appointments. Well constructed to hold a book or files with out destroying them. Top zipper pouch to carry meds, a snack, or phone. Small enough for day exploration and comfortable enough to serve as a quick book bag when waiting for appointments. It is always backed and at the door for a half day of excitement and yet not overbearing but fashionable.
When picking out a camera bag, you need to be confident that the backpack you are choosing is reliable enough to protect thousands of dollars of very delicate equipment. Made out of durable Vinylon F, the Kanken is both extremely durable and highly waterproof – meaning that no matter what conditions you’re shooting in, you can have peace of mind in knowing that your cameras, lenses, flashes, and memory cards are safe and sound in the bag’s easy-to-access central compartment.
Yes, this backpack is very aesthetically pleasing. You’ve got me there. Though it is surprisingly small (the original kanken is more of a kid sized backpack….or teeny tiny adult sized. In fact the whole story behind the kanken is that it was made for school children in the 70s). The material feels durable, though it is not completely waterproof. There’s no padding so you definitely don’t want to carry a laptop or tablet in it. Also the dye from the bag can rub off on your clothing or on items you’re carrying in your bag.
Every generation of Scandinavian Kids have worn
Fjallraven’s this daypack since it debuted in 1978. The classic design is the same today as back then and remains just as popular. For school, day trips, or biking to work the Kanken makes a lifelong companion for kids and adults.
I wonder with a bag such as the Kanken, if there would be any issue with what Cloud discusses? The Kanken not only is environmentally friendly, but is a money and back ache saver. With products like these I do not see how being green in public would matter anymore with a choice like this. If the environmentally friendly products like the Kanken had just as many features as other backpacks, then more green products would be purchased. I believe if more products where like this then it would help the environment, involve no sacrifice, and still give the reputation that Cloud suggests people are after. Wouldn’t the world benefit from the increase sale of green products if they were all as efficient as Kanken Rucksack.
At the end of the 1970s, reports started emerging of increasing numbers of children suffering from back pain as a result of the shoulder bags that were the fashion at the time. In order to help prevent back problems, Fjallraven’s ake Nordin created a lightweight, basic, durable backpack with plenty of room for all the essentials for a day at school.
I have had this backpack in Ice Blue for 5 years now (daily use) and it is still going strong. These backpacks are built to last and are weirdly stylish. The initial cost is a bit expensive but the quality is amazing! At first they are a bit stiff but my is now nice and soft but it still holds its shape. The Kanken is a great backpack and a great buy, The Fjallraven Kanken Backpack is modeled after the classic bag that Swedish kids carried to school in the 70s. The durable and waterproof Vinylon-F material keeps your laptop safe and dry, and the padded shoulder straps ensure you can carry even large laptops comfortably on your back. The Fjallraven logo doubles as a reflector. This is a very spacious bag with lots of room.
This bag is cute and functional. I purchased the black one and use it instead of a purse and take it to my business-casual office job. I like having extra space for water bottle, shoes, gym clothes, books. It successfully fits a SurfaceBook (14.2 inch screen laptop) in a padded sleeve. I wanted a backpack to carry the laptop around without putting stress on the shoulder. The little front pocket is great for easy access to phone or keys.
The Classic cheap Kanken backpack includes a zipper that opens the entire main compartment. Features very hardwearing vinyl fabric with simple shoulder straps and handle on top. The Fjallraven Kanken Backpack, a staple in Sweden for over 35 years, is a classic school backpack for all ages and is worn around the world today by students, travelers, and people who like to carry stuff. The product hasn’t changed much over the years, except that you can now get it in a whole range of colours and models (a bigger version, a mini version and a laptop version)… and today on The Travel Tester “Things That Tick Thursday’s”, I’m taking you on a short review.
Classic Kanken backpack with zipper that opens the entire main compartment. Very hardwearing vinylon fabric. Inside pocket with seat pad. Simple shoulder straps and handles on top. Reflector in the logo. Straight backs are happy backs. Kanken was launched in 1978 to spare the backs of school children. Back problems had begun to appear in increasingly younger age groups and shoulder bags were popular. Kanken has many simple, clear functions. The backpack soon became a common sight at pre-schools and nature schools around the country.
Is my laptop or notebook likely to have the necessary defense against the cold, heat, rain, etc, with this budget carrying case? Am I going to use all of the additional frills that come with the actual expensive high end model? Is there a good center ground to choose from?
Fast forward nearly two decades, and Sweden was crippled by slumps. Studies revealed that 80% of the Swedish population was suffering from back pain, and that lumbar problems were being reported at a younger and younger age (blame trendy messenger-style bags). The year was 2009 and the backpack was undergoing a micro-revival. A loosely defined one, in the sense that two or three of my high school friends ditched their LeSportSac and Hervé Chapelier totes for black backpacks by The North Face. In need of a replacement for my worn-to-shreds American Apparel tote bag, I, too, focused my attention on a more supportive, two-strap alternative.
And so with the help of the Swedish Guide and Scout Association, Nordin created the Kanken (stemming from the Swedish kanka, or “carrying”) daypack in 1978. The pack was intended for schoolchildren, offering enough space for two standard ring binders and evenly distributing weight, straightening the backs of slumped Swedish young’uns. In its second year in production, Fjallraven sold over 30,000 Kanken backpacks.
Because the bags come in so many different size, variations with other accessories like pouches, pencil cases, wallets and laptop cases to match, it’s extremely versatile if you love a certain season’s collection since you will be practically buying all the other accessories as well. The bags are also spacious, and lined with soft fleece fabric for some and a dedicated laptop pocket.
By design, the bag’s boxy shape makes it appear full, no matter how little crap I’ve put in it. Coupled with my habit of two-strapping (rather than assuming the ~cool~ one-strap shoulder sling that negates the backpack’s even weight distribution and back support), I’ve heard enough “how much sh*t do you have in there?!” comments to last me a lifetime. But that’s not a bad thing. In fact, all through college, it became an identifier. Friends were able to spot me from hundreds of feet away and find me more easily in a crowded dining hall because of it.
Fjallraven’s Kanken backpack is the classic that will always be cool. Designed in 1978 and still just as relevant today with durable polyvinyl, roomy main zip compartment and easily accessible front + side pockets. Complete with adjustable woven shoulder straps and dual top handles for easy carrying.
If you know anything about us RF girls, you know that we love a good backpack. Being the slightly clumsy ladies we are, we truly need to have both arms free for balance and a large compartment for storing a densely-packed makeup bag for when we realize that our eyeliner flicks were not as even as we thought.
However, I thought there had to be fashion sacrifices made in exchange for a backpack’s functionality and comfort — and then, the Fjallraven Kanken bag snuck into my tundra of conundrum, like the arctic fox it is named after. Designed with hardwearing Vinylon fabric, Fjallraven’s iconic Kanken backpack is the perfect size for day trips and tough enough to take on your greatest adventures. Convertible straps give you carrying options, it has a removable seat pad, and the inside sleeve fits up to a 15″ laptop.
Fjallraven Kanken: The bags are available in Singapore in some designer stores, as there is no flagship store specializing in the bags yet.
